Ms. Sangduen Lek Chailert
Thailand

Thailand Committee Chairperson, Asia Women Leaders Forum
Founder & Director, Elephant Nature Park Founder, Save Elephant Foundation

Ms. Sangduen Lek Chailert is one of Thailand’s leading environmental conservationists and a global pioneer in animal welfare and sustainable ecotourism.

Born in the mountainous regions of northern Thailand, she was raised with a deep reverence for nature, inspired by her grandfather, who was a shaman. This early connection to the natural world shaped her lifelong commitment to protecting animals and the environment.

In 1995, she founded Elephant Nature Park, a sanctuary dedicated to rescuing elephants from harsh labor, exploitation, and abuse. Her work extends far beyond elephant protection: she has helped rescue and care for thousands of animals, including dogs, cats, and water buffalo, while simultaneously creating employment opportunities and providing education for local communities. The park is widely recognized as a pioneering model of a sustainable, community-based ecosystem where humans and nature coexist in harmony.

Her tireless dedication has been internationally acclaimed. She has been named one of TIME Magazine’s “Heroes of Asia,” awarded the French National Order of Merit, and honored with the Ford Foundation Heritage Award, among other distinctions.

She currently serves as Thailand Chair of the Asian Women Leaders Forum (AWLF), where she continues to advance environmental conservation, women’s leadership, and holistic wellbeing, while promoting the creation of new social value across Asia.
