Dr. Ranjana Kumari’s dedication to social causes began with her concern for a dowry death near her home in 1976, which inspired her to write the renowned publication “Brides Are Not for Burning,” shedding light on the plight of women in India. Throughout her career, she has focused on addressing issues such as anti-female foeticide, political participation of women, women’s education and economic empowerment, and anti-dowry campaigns.
Dowry deaths, rape, and other forms of violence against women have been among Dr. Kumari’s prime focus areas. Over four decades of her work, she has assisted thousands of women victims of domestic violence and dowry, providing not only medical, financial, and legal aid but also crucial emotional support and empowerment. Dr. Kumari’s efforts extend beyond mere assistance to ensuring the rehabilitation and financial independence of these women.
Having dedicated her life to significant social causes, Dr. Kumari has worked with numerous rural women’s groups across the country, advocating for marginalized and underprivileged sections of society. She has trained village women leaders, facilitated educational opportunities for tribal women, and organized professional training for women in politics at the Indian Institute of Management, Bengaluru.
