Born in Tokyo in 1948. In 1948, she joined the Association for Aid and Relief, Japan (AAR) and served as its Executive Director six months after its establishment. From November 2000 to June 2008, she served as Board Chairman. In July 2009, she was appointed Chairperson. On June 26, 2023, she retired as Honorary Chairpreson.
In 1996, she received the Foreign Minister’s Commendation for her many years of international cooperation. From June 2005, she is a refugee examination counselor at the Immigration Services Agency of the Ministry of Justice.
Her picture book, “Please Give Me Flowers, Not Landmines” (text by Fusako Yanase, illustrations by Shoaki Ip), which supports the campaign to ban landmines, won the Japan Picture Book Award (Readers’ Prize). 620,000 copies have already been published.
